The Mining Indaba in Cape Town has of late attracted mainly service providers, governments and the occasional larger cap company. Over the last three or so years, there have been a dearth of investors and the investment bankers who show up tend to be focused on a winter break in a warm and picturesque location. Back in Toronto, the PDAC has been ever more quiet, despite the increasing number of financings in the junior mining space. Perhaps the low key PDAC 2016 this March was due to a lag as bookings would have had to take place before activity surfaced in the markets.
Next up is the Junior Indaba in Joburg. It will be very interesting to gauge the tone of the marketplace for juniors in Africa. The recent financing activity on the TSX-V has largely been on later stage companies in jurisdictions closer to home. As and if the markets continue to take hold for junior explorers and miners, investor appetite to go further afield increases. The Joburg Indaba will be the next point to take the market pulse.
